1.6 million km², 3 times the size of France, 80,000 tons, 1,800 billion pieces of plastic, these are the characteristics of the 7th continent.
It is a heap of waste made up of floating objects and microparticles from man’s industrial activity. It is located between Hawaii and California and its consequences on the marine ecosystem are becoming increasingly important.
Today 90% of marine animals ingest plastic during their lifetime, the most affected are seabirds, turtles and 660 other species. By 2050, if the consumption habits of the world’s population do not change, there will be more plastic in the oceans than fish.
Every year 8 million tons of plastic waste are dumped into the world’s oceans, the equivalent of 250 kilograms per second, or about one dumpster every minute. Today it is important to be aware of the seriousness of the situation, all the more so as plastic straws have become one of the 10 most collected waste products on the coasts. They represent about 4% of the waste collected at sea but their damage on the oceans is much more important.
Faced with this challenge, many alternatives to plastic straws have been developed. At Payapate, we have made a bet on straws made of food paste. In our opinion, this alternative is the most qualitative and viable for our customers.
